KNOW THE PURPOSE WHY YOU ARE READ

You need to be able to know why you are reading that book, that passage, whatever it is, know your purpose for reading; is it for fun, for the forthcoming examination, understand your purpose. This first step will help pave the way for the other strategic steps; as it will open up your mind and channel it to receive the information contained in the book you are reading.

TAKE NOTE WHILE YOU READ

This is essential, as it will help you to grasp all the important points in the book, the concept quicker. It will help you to summarize the whole passage of the book; thereby putting it in a nutshell. This can be achieved following the two procedures below.

  • HIGHLIGHT IMPORTANT POINT
    As you read, there are going to be areas that will draw your attention, you just feel interested in it, those are points you need to highlight.
    When you highlight them it will make you create your own ideas of that topic you are reading from the book.
  • REWORD WHAT YOU HAVE READ

When you are done reading, always make sure you create a note of what you have read as what you have read when what you have read is still fresh in your mind. Put what you have learned in your word in a jotter, or any book, that you can have access later, do not jump this step, always do it, as you rewrite what you have read, it helps to make it stick to you.

CONNECT THE THINGS YOU READ

When you read similar things from a book, try to connect the things by using acronyms like to remember the color in the rainbow you just use this acronym ROYGBIV. This then will make you remember that R is Red and O is Orange and so on.

CREATE A METAL PICTURE OF WHAT YOU READ

This can also help you, remember easily. When you are reading a book try to imagine what you read. For instance if you are reading about a war, you can just be imagining soldiers going to fight, fire and smoke, people running and so many more; this will make the year of the war be in your memory. Also, when you are studying Chemistry, like let say a compound of Nitrogen like Dinitrogen (I) Oxide you can just be imagining a sweet-smelling aroma; for it has a sweet smell, doing this will definitely make you absorb the whole thing quickly, which can easily remember it later.
